Memorial Centre Farmers Market 2014

I think I designed more last year than in any other. Here are my favourite design picks from my work as Marketing Manager for the Memorial Centre Farmers' Market.

(Please note, the silhourettes originated from another designer who made the market poster previously. The produce heart graphic came courtesy of Foodland Ontario.)

(On this design I also did the product photography.)

(None of the photography is mine)

(In this case, I only took the photograph on the left)

(Not my photography.)

I am so proud of this one - it took me ages and is the most complex design I've done to date!

PeaceQuest 2014

Time is tight these days. Here are my favourite items designed for PeaceQuest.ca in 2014.

Featured in the Winter 2015 issue of Ploughshares Monitor

Press Releases

These are some press releases I designed for Transition Kingston and Cycle Kingston. I used Microsoft Office 365 for both of these files. These are long ones, so they took roughly 3 hours each. A shorter 1-paragraph press release should take roughly an hour, and even less once a template is created...

Everything Hearthmakers

Here is a selection of posters I designed while working at Hearthmakers Energy Cooperative. All of these events I helped to organize and facilitate. It was great fun, they are a good organization. I highly recommend volunteering for the Depave Paradise project.
The fish, RAIN logo, and wavy background were not designed by me. Created in Microsoft Word.

For this poster, the background photo is also mine. Created with GIMP.

Created in GIMP. Photos by myself and Lizzography.

Cabaret 5 goes Pulp

I LOVED making this poster. It was agony learning some new techniques to create the little "Halloween Special" skull portion, but totally worth it in the end! The original image came from a pulp novel book cover. I spent quite a bit of time matching up fonts to maintain the feel of the text.

jiu jitsu is epic

One of the Main Street Market staff over the summer asked me to help him with posters for his jiu jitsu class. With the intent being to put them into high schools, there were a few very specific restrictions.

No pictures of "violence", and no "promotion" of violence.

Unable to decide whether "awesome" or "epic" was better. Two versions got made. (2011)

thinq redux

The makers of THINQ, (queer and trans educators extraordinaire!) asked me to do another logo. This one was very fun because without much direction I didn't come up with the right concept on the first try...

Their response:

"Our colour scheme is blue/turquoise, black, white and silver and our sort of theme is street/graffiti. I think it would be awesome to have an androgynous silhouette of a person looking down at their crotch with some sort of background."

I scratched my head and fooled around for a while, but they were happy with the result (also because this one is wayyyy better).

Here is a nifty article about the program! (2011)

the kingston life

Things started heating up this fall (haha) with an opportunity to make a poster and an ad for a local craft fair. This is my first ad in print!

The ad can be found in the Nov/Dec Edition of Kingston Life on Page 22. Also featured in an article in the same issue are other local friends and allies Kevin Merritt and Lucas Huang on Page 46. I think I'm going to keep a few of these issues for years to come!

On a less exciting note, here is the poster. I am still very proud of it, my work keeps getting more and more complex.

This poster would -not- look this amazing without the guidance and advice of Chris Boucher, who gave me very useful pointers after looking at a suckier version of this poster.

Ultimately I ended up pulling out of the craft fair to make room in my schedule for my new dream job!. It was all in vain, but hey, they have a nice poster and it was worth it. (2011)

thinq about it!

I have facebook and the cabaret to thank for this one. One of the past cabaret performers out out an open call to design a logo for a series of workshops he is conducting to educate new students in residence about queer issues.

Its my first logo! It took longer than a professional would have (6-8 as supposed to the typical 3-4) but it's mine and I love it!

Friends at home can expect stickers in the mail in the near future! LOVE, Jolene. (2011)

the well manicured farm hand

It's been a busy summer, and Main Street Market has me making the labels for their new produce now stocking the shelves of a local grocer!

I am technically a volunteer farm intern, I am just lucky to have the technical savvy to work on some of their media and design the farmer's market stall etc. The rest of the time, I assure you, I am harvesting and weeding like a demon!

Salad greens which are now on my plate!

Its relevant to note that the original logo (Main St Market & house graphic) were done by Eric Zuuring! (2011)
